The Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to our country Milan Ekert on 6 November.

The Chair remarked at the meeting that the political and economic ties between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic set high standards thanks to, amongst other things, the essential contribution coming from the visits exchanged by the two states’ leaders. The elevated degree of the political dialogue bears well on the bilateral interactions between the two countries in other areas in that it lets deepen them. Azerbaijan intends to develop the economic, cultural and humanitarian relations with the Czech Republic more still in the future, according to Mrs Gafarova.

It was also noted during the conversation that the bipartite instruments signed to date formed a solid legal foundation for the Czech-Azerbaijani relations and that the trade turnover increases witnessed every year came as a logical consequence of the relevant work done over the few years past. Azerbaijan plays a substantial role in the maintenance of the energy security of Europe currently whilst the Czech Republic is one of the chief energy partners of Azerbaijan in the European Union. There are wide opportunities to promote mutually beneficial co-operation in such economic areas as communications, trade, transport, mechanical engineering and electronics.

Then, the Speaker spoke of the firm ties between the legislative authorities of the two countries and mentioned in the context the work done by the friendship groups active in both parliaments. The exchanged parliamentary delegation visits and the regular meetings of both sides’ MPs in influential international parliamentary organisations are crucial for the on-going experience and information exchange, in Mrs Gafarova’s opinion.

Having brought up the subject of the Armenian-Azeri conflict over Highland Garabagh, Mrs Gafarova informed Mr Ekert of the current frontline situation and of the Armenian armed forces’ provocations aimed at civilian population.

Milan Ekert, in turn, said that the Czech Republic assigned high priority to advancing co-operation with Azerbaijan, which he described as an important strategic partner of his country. The Ambassador mentioned the Czech interest in intensifying the relations with Azerbaijan both bilaterally and multilaterally. The growth of the political, economic, trading and humanitarian ties serves the well-being of the two nations, according to Mr Ekert.

Besides, the Ambassador said, he followed the developments in this particular region of the South Caucasus closely and hoped that the problem of Highland Garabagh would be eliminated presently.

The meeting also had an exchange of opinions about the furtherance of Interparliamentary relations, ways to settle regional conflicts, fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and the other matters of interest to both sides.
