Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with members of the Governing Boards of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) and the Arab Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ARABOSAI) on 18 July. 

During the meeting, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis highlighted at the significance of holding the 62^nd meeting of the ASOSAI Governing Board and arranging a joint meeting with ARABOSAI in Baku, emphasising that the organisation of such international events in Azerbaijan reflects the importance that the country places on financial reporting, independent auditing and international cooperation in the said areas.

Also, the Speaker informed the guests about the Milli Majlis – the legislative assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan, its operational principles, the representation of political parties, the promotion of gender equality in parliament as well as its committees and commissions.

The Speaker mentioned the oversight functions performed by the Milli Majlis in addition to its legislative role. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis emphasised that, pursuant to the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, international co-operation is one of the key functional priorities of the Chamber of Accounts of the Republic of Azerbaijan, established by the Milli Majlis. These efforts seek to strengthen institutional capacity, implement advanced standards and enhance the quality of public auditing in line with leading international practices. 

As the conversation went on, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis expressed pleasure with that, as part of their current visit, the guests will visit Azerbaijan’s cultural capital, the town of Shusha, and told them about the liberation of our lands from occupation following the Patriotic War as well as the extensive construction and restoration work being carried out in these regions. 

Expressing gratitude for the meeting, the Head of the National Audit Office of China and Secretary General of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI), Hou Kai, noted with satisfaction his visit to our country to participate in the 62nd meeting of the ASOSAI Governing Board and the joint meeting with the Arab Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ARABOSAI) in Baku. 

Speaking on behalf of ASOSAI and the National Audit Office of China, the guest thanked the Speaker of the Milli Majlis and the Chamber of Accounts for having arranged the aforementioned events. He stated that, thanks to Azerbaijan’s organisational efforts, members of the ASOSAI and ARABOSAI associations had been able to convene at the crossroads of East and West, thus gaining the opportunity to discuss the development of public sector auditing. 

As the guest emphasised, public sector auditing is a vital component of national oversight systems; it plays an indispensable role in the socio-economic development of all countries. He also shared his views on Azerbaijan’s role in promoting global environmental security, the successful hosting of the COP29 in our country and the discussion of significant issues there, whilst also extending peace and sustainable development wishes to Azerbaijan.

Besides, the meeting saw an exchange of opinions regarding other subjects of interest to all the parties.
