The chairman of the Milli Majlis International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Committee Samad Seyidov had a meeting with the visiting delegation led by the chairman of the Lithuania-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary connexions group of the Lithuanian Seimas Kazys Starkevičius on 14 June.

After greetings had been exchanged, Mr Seyidov mentioned the fine relations between our countries – the relations the broadening of which is in a considerable way due to the political will of the two presidents and the speakers of both parliaments. Co-operation is under way in all the areas – our interaction is not limited to economic matters but also goes on, and every efficiently, too, under the aegis of international organisations. At the same time, our ambassadors are doing a great kind of work to promote the Azerbaijani-Lithuanian relations and the fruit of their efforts are there to see, according to Mr Seyidov.

Mr Seyidov thanked the Lithuanian Republic for her attitude to Azerbaijan and for her solidarity in curbing inadequate, false and sometimes premeditatedly insulting escapades against our country. If one were to compare the three South Caucasian republics now, one would see clearly that Azerbaijan, which appears the most independent, is keener on co-operation with Europe while also being more open and sincere with her partners.

Kazys Starkevičius congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the termination of the thirty-year-long Armenian occupation, made a mention of the current humanitarian demining in progress in the liberated territories and said that Armenia’s having captured the lands of Azerbaijan and the Armenian missile attacks on civilian population and civilian facilities did not fit in the international legal frameworks or conform to such norms.

The leader of the Azerbaijan-Lithuania inter-parliamentary connexions working group Nasib Mahamaliyev talked about our country’s strategic co-operation within nine member-states of the European Union, adding that more and more countries were willing to strike up co-operation with Azerbaijan.

As he talked about the meetings of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev with Charles Michel and Nikol Pashinyan in Brussels, Mr Mahamaliyev drew the Lithuanian parliamentarians’ attention to the great pains our state’s leader is taking to achieve peace and security and, conversely, the presence of revanchist powers in Armenia still. Armenia poses threats to energy and transport lines by setting up its military bases on the border with our country. It is vital for regional security that a peace accord be signed, Mr Mahamaliyev pointed out.

The conversation continued. Other matters of shared interest were brought up.

Our ambassador in Vilnius Tamerlan Garayev and other officials took part in the meeting as well.
