Meeting CE GRETA Group Members at Milli Majlis
First Deputy Chair of the Milli Majlis/Chairman of the parliamentary Law Policy and State-Building Committee Ali Huseynov and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee Zahid Oruj had a meeting with the members of the Council of Europe Great of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) on 9 September.
Mr Huseynli told the visitors of the law on countering human trade that our country had passed in 2005 and streamlined eventually; what maters equally as well, according to him, that the law meets the relevant international standards. Besides, the National Co-ordinator on the Action against Human Trafficking reports to the Parliament every year, Mr Huseynli added.
Whilst a legal issue, human trade is also a grave social problem, Mr Huseynli remarked before telling about the constant and fruitful interaction between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Co-ordinator as well as the most commendable co-operation amongst the MIA and the GRETA.
The chairman of the Human Rights Committee Zahid Oruj recalled the four changes carried out in the legislative system since the passing of the law on combatting human trade in order to incorporate recommendations made by international organisations. He also mentioned the relevant national action plans and the existing Chief Department for the Action against Human Trafficking as well as the NGOs addressing themselves to the same problem. Mr Oruj went further to emphasise the importance of optimising the relevant legislation continually.
The CE human trafficking experts Ia Dadunashvili and Yorgos Vanikiotis thanked the Azerbaijani side for the sincere reception given them before telling their hosts about the activities of the GRETA and stressing the importance of its co-operation with Azerbaijan. They showed interest in the countering measures adopted in our country and enquired after the results, existing problems and legislative amendments. The CE experts were given thorough answers to their questions and were made aware of the current situation, the legislation streamlining as well as the current activities and the jobs slated to be carried out yet.
The deputy chairman of the Law Policy and State-Building Committee Gudrat Hasanguliyev, Mesut Bedırhanoğlu and Parvine Gadami of the Secretariat for the CE Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and the GRETA contact person in Azerbaijan – a department head of the above-mentioned Chief Department of the MIA Samir Garayev joined the conversation as well. They all took part in the discussions and commented on the items that were brought up during the meeting.
