Chairman of the Milli Majlis International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Committee Samad Seyidov had a meeting on 17 November with the special envoy of the European Union for the Eastern Partnership Dirk Schuebel and his delegation that included EU officials and the appointees of several member-states on the EP.

Mr Seyidov greeted the arrivals before stressing that Azerbaijan as part of the Eastern Partnership and highlighting the importance of today’s meeting.

The current situation in our region was mentioned, with the head of the parliamentary committee saying that Azerbaijan was inclined to make normal neighbourhood with Armenia and that, at the same time, the people of Armenia want peace with Azerbaijan too. There are certain forces impeding such an arrangement, regrettably. For her part, Azerbaijan spares no effort to have sound relations with the neighbouring states, according to Samad Seyidov.

The latest resolution of France’s Senate concerning Azerbaijan was brought up as well. Mr Seyidov remarked that such a stance of France was inadmissible given her role as one of the peace process go-betweens.

EU’s special envoy for the EP Dirk Schuebel disclosed the main goal of his arrival: to talk over ways to promote a continued growth of the co-operation with Azerbaijan as well as to put the heads together about the established geopolitical state of affairs and new approaches. On the other hand, Mr Schuebel stressed the importance of the position taken by Azerbaijan that sits in a crucial geographic spot. EU would like to make a contribution of its own to installing an enduring peace in the South Caucasus, according to Mr Schuebel.

The special envoy for the South Caucasus and ambassador on the Eastern Partnership of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Brice Rocquefeuil pointed out that the resolution of the Senate of France did not relay the position of the French Government.

The conversation went on; its participants were exchanging views upon other matters of joint concern and interest.
