Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary Connections Samad Seyidov met on 16 February with the visiting delegation led by Mujtaba Zunnur, Chairman of the National Security and External Policy Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mr Seyidov brought up the close relations between our countries not omitting to emphasise specially the support that the Islamic Republic of Iran had extended to the Azerbaijan Republic’s just cause of recovering its national territory – the support, he noted, which had been voiced repeatedly during and after the 44-day Patriotic War and is of historic import to our country. The Azerbaijani people appreciated especially highly the statements and speeches the leaders of Iran made on the 3rd and the 4th of November; those mattered most seriously for the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations. It was no coincidence that President Ilham Aliyev of the Azerbaijan Republic said as he called at the Khudaferin Bridge shortly after the de-occupation of our lands that the border between Azerbaijan and Iran was a border of friendship that served exclusively the cause of furthering the progress and friendship of the two nations, Mr Seyidov pointed out.

Turning to a number of key points, Mr Seyidov said that our country supported each other in the pandemic as well. A new reality has been established in the region that promotes expansion of the relations between our parliaments. The Milli Majlis led by its Chair Mrs Sahiba Gafarova intends to strengthen the co-operation with Iran further.

Mr Zunnur passed on to the people of Azerbaijan the congratulations of the leaders and all the members of the Iranian Parliament as well as of the people of Iran on the Great Victory. He also thanked Azerbaijan for supporting Iran against all international encroachments that target his country.

Then, Mr Zunnur mentioned the Iranian side’s intention to build up close co-operation bonds with our country in all the areas available, expressed a wish that Iranian companies would be involved in substantial projects of rearranging Garabagh and said that the Iranian side wanted to restore gratis the Azerbaijani mosques that the Armenians had destroyed during the occupation. Iranian companies possess a tremendous construction and rebuilding potential, according to Mr Zunnur who went further to refer to the bilateral transport corridors being carried into life and touched upon some other matters, too. He said, amongst other things, that Azerbaijan was at the very core of both the East and the West geographically and so, could unite them.

The role of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev in the furtherance of the Azerbaijani-Iranian relations was gravitated upon during the conversation. The two sides agreed that the relations were on the rise.

Deputy Leader of the Working Group for the Interparliamentary Connections with Iran Eldar Ibrahimov recalled the developments immediately after Azerbaijan gained national independence in the 1990s, saying those were the tokens of the friendship and brotherhood between our countries.

The members of the Milli Majlis Committee for Interparliamentary Relations and Interparliamentary Connections Elman Nasirov and Sahib Aliyev talked about the today and the tomorrow of the bilateral co-operation while the members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Mahmud Abbaszade and Ali Alizade spoke kindly of friendship and co-operation, and put forth relevant suggestions.

Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan Seyid Abbas Mousavi and other officials took part in the meeting, too.
