Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met on 15 March with the visiting Chairman of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan of Russian Federation Zaur Askenderov and his delegation.

Speaker Gafarova followed her greetings to the guests by a narrative about the historical ties and common values of the peoples of Dagestan and Azerbaijan, mentioned with pleasure the success and growth of the relations with each passing day and underscored the outstanding role that the two states’ leaders had in this as well as the considerable input coming from exchanged visits. Mrs Gafarova also commented on the fruitful co-operation between Azerbaijan and the RF subjects including Dagestan, pointing at the place of their own that inter-legislature connexions had in this interaction.

Further, Sahiba Gafarova recalled the Dagestan leader Serghey Melikov’s visit to Azerbaijan in December last year, a visit of importance to the bilateral links’ progress, and her own conversation with him then.

Azerbaijan freed her lands with the 44 days’ Patriotic War of 2020. The thirty years of Armenian occupation were put paid to under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev and a new, completely different situation that is observable now as well established across the region consequently. Azerbaijan has offered Armenia to sign a peace treaty based on the five fundamental principles of international law, according to Mrs Gafarova who went on to tell Mr Askenderov of the situation with the Lachin Road and the provocations of Armenia that hamper peace and security efforts in our region.

Chairman of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan of Russian Federation Zaur Askenderov, in turn, was talking about the closeness of the Azerbaijani and Dagestani peoples and their shared values. They up in Dagestan are preparing to mark the 100th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Great Leader Heydar Aliyev while arrangements are being made here in Azerbaijan to celebrate the centenary of the great Dagestani poet Rasul Hamzatov; now, this is a clear indication of the interconnectedness of our peoples, in the opinion of Mr Askenderov.

Going further, Zaur Askenderov referred praisingly to the dynamic advance of Azerbaijan under the guidance of President Ilham Aliyev and said that Dagestan attached considerable importance to broadening the relations with Azerbaijan more in all the areas covered.

The parliaments’ input in the progress of the two-way relations was mentioned as well; at that, the Dagestani guest said he was certain that an exchange of legislative experience could help make better laws.

Azerbaijanis live in Dagestan as one family with the other peoples of the country, Mr Askenderov added with pleasure.

The conversation continued; the two legislature leaders went on to exchange views upon matters of shared interest and concern.
