Speaking at her 16 May meeting with Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili who is in Azerbaijan on an official visit, Chair Sahiba Gafarova thanked him for having taken part in the special parliamentary sitting on the centenary of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev and the sincere speech he had delivered there.

The relations between the good neighbours Azerbaijan and Georgia are rooted in history; the friendly ties formed by Great Leader Heydar Aliyev had been developed further during the independence period and are now supported by the leaders of both countries, Sahiba Gafarova said. We co-operate successfully in the economic, political, humanitarian and other fields; our joint petroleum and transport projects prove that the bilateral partnership is strong.

Speaker Gafarova underlined the importance of the Azerbaijani President's visit to Georgia and of the visits of the Georgian Prime Minister to Azerbaijan. Advancing the two-way co-operation had been discussed in great detail during these visits, she stressed.

Talking then about our inter-parliamentary relations, Mrs Gafarova mentioned the most effective co-operation in that field as well as she did the unique part in the development of bilateral relations that had befallen both legislative assemblies. Friendship groups function successfully in both Azerbaijani and Georgian legislatures; our national delegations collaborate closely in inter-parliamentary organisations. There are ample opportunities to continue intensifying the ties between the parliamentary committees as well; certain steps are being taken in this direction, too.

The co-operation between Azerbaijan and Georgia today set an example for the entire region whilst at the same time contributing to peace, stability and progress. The leader of the Milli Majlis also spoke to her Georgian counterpart about the processes in the region and Azerbaijan's efforts to achieve peace.

Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili thanked Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova for the invitation to come to Azerbaijan, a neighbour and a friendly country. Mr Papuashvili went on to witness his pleasure at the participation in the special Milli Majlis setting dedicated to the centenary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev who, Mr Papuashvili pointed out, had laid the foundation for the existence of today’s modern and independent Azerbaijan. That Azerbaijan achieved the integrity of her territory is a vivid manifestation of the wisdom of Heydar Aliyev who was a person of value not only to Azerbaijan but also for the whole region. The projects that he initiated are bearing fruit today.

Going on, the Georgian Speaker was pleased to mention the meetings he had had in the course of the current official visit to Azerbaijan. He also commented on the growth prospects of our inter-parliamentary co-operation.

Other matters of mutual interest were not neglected at this conversation, either.
