A Meeting at the Milli Majlis

The Chairman of the Milli Majlis International and inter-Parliamentary Relations Committee Samad Seyidov met with a delegation of the EU Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia (COEST) on 30 May.

Mr Seyidov stressed the great importance that Azerbaijan attaches to co-operation with the European Union and spoke about the fruitful interaction between the parties, particularly in the energy sector. He also underlined the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding between Azerbaijan and the EU in relation to the energy sector. As for the current situation in the region, the Committee Chairman mentioned the practical steps taken by Azerbaijan to establish normal good neighbourly relations with Armenia and to sign a peace treaty with it.

As he then spoke of the role of the international community, including the European Union and its institutions, in the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus, Samad Seyidov told the gathering of Azerbaijan's efforts to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region.

Head of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Co-operation Committee Tural Ganjaliyev then talked about the necessity of developing parliamentary diplomacy and the relations with the EU whilst Head of the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan Ambassador Peter Michalko emphasised the high level of the relations and outlined the reform partnership.

According to Chair of the COEST Working Party Ciara O’Brien, Azerbaijan is an economically advanced country, her relations with the EU have considerable prospects, and peace and stability will certainly be restored to our region eventually.

Then, there was an exchange of opinions about the EU-Azerbaijan partnership and across the regional topics.

Amongst the other participants of the meeting were Aziz Alakbarov of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Euronest PA, the COEST diplomats stationed with the EU Member States’ missions accredited in Brussels as well representatives of the EU Council, the European Commission and the EU External Action Service.
