Chairman of the Milli Majlis International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Committee, Head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Samad Seyidov met with co-rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee on 5 June.

As he was talking about the current regional situation at the meeting, Mr Seyidov recalled the large-scale projects Azerbaijan had geared into motion to reclaim the territories wrested from the Armenian invaders during the 44 days’ Patriotic War. The parliamentary committee chairman also brought up the efforts being made to return the former IDP to their homelands and stressed that the mass mining by Armenia was making all that work rather difficult. Mr Seyidov proceeded to emphasise that it was necessary to take the ex-IDP back to their native parts safely as well as to mobilise international efforts and help with de-mining the Azerbaijani provinces rid of occupation.

Then, Mr Seyidov told the co-rapporteurs of Azerbaijan’s endeavours and hands-on acts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region, and to build confidence.

The MPs Asim Mollazade, Aziz Alakbarov, Erkin Gadirli, Kamal Jafarov, Sevinj Fataliyeva and Nigyar Arpadarai talked about the pressing need of a peace pact inked by Azerbaijan and Armenia in order that a climate of trust is created in the region and that peace and security are restored to it.

The co-rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee Ian Liddell-Grainger (UK) and Liz Christoffersen (Norway) covered their visits to and meetings in Azerbaijan,  and asked questions regarding the development of regional co-operation as well as of peace and security.

The Azerbaijani MPs answered those questions and asked theirs, in return. Also, the guests were told that the peace Azerbaijan had offered Armenia was based on international law standards and principles, Azerbaijani had been evicted from Armenia and international backing was required to restore the rights of those people.

MP Parvin Karimzade and Head of the Council of Europe Baku Office Petr Sich were amongst other participants of the meeting.
