Deputy Chair of the Milli Majlis and Chairman of the parliamentary Youth and Sports Committee Adil Aliyev met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Azerbaijan Bahrom Ashrafkhanov on 3 March.

Mr Aliyev greeted the visitor before recalling the ancient roots of the relationship between our countries, the role of the two states’ leaders in its progress and the several crucial bilateral documents that were signed during their mutual visits.

The year 2020 in which Ambassador Ashrafkhanov was posted to our country went down in Azerbaijan’s history as the Victory Year until which our lands had been laid to waste under the Armenian occupation and more than a million compatriots had been displaced people, the people separated from their homelands and ancestral dwelling-places. The occupation had been the main obstacle to peace and stability in the region. But, in retaliation to yet another enemy provocation and firing at the civilian communities on 27 September 2020, the Azerbaijani Army launched a counter-offensive, dealt the fiend a crushing blow and defeated Armenia. That was the enforcement of the resolutions of the UN Security Council that had remained on paper for longer than 30 years; that was also the restoration of the territorial integrity of our country. We hope, Mr Aliyev continued, that Armenia would desist from a policy of aggression and peace would reign in the region.

Mr Ashrafkhanov said his thanks for the warm welcome and praised the all-in progress manifest in our country. Speaking of the visit to Agdam and the other de-occupied provinces that had been arranged for officials of the diplomatic missions accredited in Azerbaijan, he recalled his stern condemnation during it of the Armenian terror against the monuments of history and of the destruction by Armenians of the cultural heritage in those territories. Mr Ashrafkhanov stressed that he had not and would not spare a single effort to further the relations between our countries during his diplomatic tenure in Azerbaijan.

Mr Aliyev and Ashrafkhanov voiced the shared satisfaction with the development of the mutual relations of the two countries; they also exchanged opinions about expanding the interparliamentary co-operation and other subjects.
