Chairman of the friendship group on Azerbaijan in the National Assembly of Bulgaria Hamid Hamid has written a letter to Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, stating that in his present role he has been tracing developments in the South Caucasus over the past few years and that it is finally the time to bestow lasting peace and stability on this region.

It is emphasised in the letter that Azerbaijan, having recovered her territories from the Armenian occupation, brought forth an initiative to normalise the relations with Armenia leaning on international law norms and standards, and also suggested the signing of a peace treaty. Any accommodation ought to follow the principles of mutual sovereignty and territorial integrity respect as well as non-interference with each other’s internal affairs, Mr Hamid writes.

‘Regretfully, we have been witnessing several processes that pose a threat to the on-going peace talks with active engagement of international partners. Continuation of Armenia’s support to the very existence of the separatist regime created in the Garabagh region of Azerbaijan do harm the peace talks and aggravates the already tense situation in the region,’ the letter goes on.

‘Consequently, the so-called ‘presidential elections’ held by this illegal regime on September 9, 2023, is a flagrant violation of the fundamental norms and principles of international law and manifestation of aggressive separatism that can’t be tolerated in today’s world.’

The international community should condemn those ‘elections’ whereas the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognized borders should be strongly supported, according to Mr Hamid.

In conclusion, Mr Hamid writes that any steps that endanger a peace process should be rejected and prevented. International community needs to sustain constructive continuation of peace talks that will bring the much-awaited peace and stability to the South Caucasus.
