Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has had a meeting with the visiting delegation led by Alexander Beglov, Governor of St Petersburg, Russian Federation.

It was remarked during the meeting that the relations between Azerbaijan and Russia were based on good neighbourhood and mutual understanding, and that our ties encompassed many areas. The current visit, too, is an indicator of the level set by the relations between our countries. The part the personal relations between the Heads of State play in the progress of co-operation of the two countries was accentuated in the course of the conversation as well.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis emphasised the centuries-long historical bond between our nations – the bond that is preserved successfully today.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova then expressed her condolences in regard to the terror attack committed in Russia.

The substantial role of the parliaments in the advancement of the bilateral relations was underlined at the meeting as well. They mentioned the close co-operation of the Milli Majlis with both the Federation Council and the State Duma. Reciprocal visits and the parties’ positive dialogue promoted a continued growth of the ties. Meanwhile, the interaction of the friendship groups, too, ensures that our connexions are becoming increasingly profound.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova stressed as she was talking of her official visits to Russian Federation that the Memorandum of Understanding inked between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia generated opportunities to continue the progress of the ties. According to her, issues related to co-operation amongst our legislatures’ committees are being considered as well.

The ties between the Milli Majlis and the Legislative Assembly of St Petersburg were also mentioned – as was that Members of the Legislative Assembly had visited our country.  

Voicing his appreciation of the hospitality extended by the hosting side, the Governor of St Petersburg Alexander Beglov said that his arrival in our country had to do with the 20^th anniversary of the establishment of the Inter-Governmental Economic and Humanitarian Affairs Co-operation Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan and St Petersburg/

Witnessing his respect for the Azerbaijani people’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the Governor remarked that the political course blazed by that wise person was today continued with great success by President Ilham Aliyev. Mr Beglov recalled the 100^th anniversary of the Grand Leader Heydar Aliyev celebrated last year and recalled the relevant large-scale eventing that had gone in St Petersburg.

As the conversation progressed, the guest shared his pleasant recollections of Baku and said that the progress of our capital city had left the arrivals deeply impressed.

There was at the meeting also an exchange of opinions across other matters of shared interest.
