Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met on 23 April with a delegation led by Chairman of the Defence Committee of the People’s National Assembly of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Head of the Algeria-Azerbaijan Friendship Group Garbi Abdelbaset.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova mentioned the 30^th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between our countries this year, adding that the current state of the ties between Azerbaijan and Algeria brought contentment.

It was talked at the meeting about the significance of reciprocal visits of the Heads of State for the progress of the relations. In particular, it was emphasised that the visit of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Algeria in November 2022 had heralded a historic stage in the advancement of the connexions between our friendly states.

Besides, they said as the conversation went on that it was necessary to broaden the economic, cultural and educational ties between Azerbaijan and Algeria.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, who underlined the special roles of the parliaments in the deepening of the relationship, mentioned the sound interaction in place between the two legislative assemblies. Our countries’ mutual support internationally was mentioned as well. Members of both legislatures work together in many international organisations. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis lauded Algeria’s active engagement in the work of the Non-Aligned Movement’s Parliamentary Network established upon the instance of President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.

The Chairman of the Defence Committee of the People’s National Assembly of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Head of the Algeria-Azerbaijan Friendship Group Garbi Abdelbaset congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on his victory at the extraordinary presidential election in February this year. He described that victory of our Head of State as the appreciation of his unprecedented services to our nation. He also congratulated Azerbaijan on the restoration of her territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Having then passed on to Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova the greetings of President of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly Ibrahim Boughali, Garbi Abdelbaset stressed the importance of the relations between the two countries, including their co-operation within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement. This relationship has also created opportunities for the development of bilateral ties, according to Mr Abdelbaset.

The importance of a continued deepening of the co-operation between our parliaments and of broadening the contacts amongst parliamentary committees and friendship groups was broached as well.

Furthermore, they underlined the significance of the forthcoming hosting by our country of the 29^th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP29 – this year.

Other matters of interest to both sides were talked over as well.
