The Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union signed a Memorandum of understanding in Geneva, Switzerland with regards to holding a Parliamentary Conference on the sidelines of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP29. The document was signed by Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova and Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong.

At the signing ceremony, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis underscored the significance of the signed document and said that the Parliamentary Conference would, as a parliamentary platform, support the events planned to take place during COP29. According to Sahiba Gafarova, this event will enable parliamentarians exchange views and put forth proposals and new ideas as to climate change countering. The Speaker said she was certain that the conference would set high standards through the combined efforts of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Azerbaijan is honoured to host such a prestigious event as COP29 happens to be, according to Speaker Sahiba Gafarova who remarked that that was also a token of recognition of our country’s action against climate change nationally as well as on the regional and global levels.

Martin Chungong was content to recall his visit to Azerbaijan and conversation with President Ilham Aliyev, and thanked the Head of State for his support. He went further to say that the document at hand was an outcome of negotiations with the Milli Majlis. The Parliamentary Conference will also be a historic highlight for parliamentary diplomacy and the joint struggle against global challenges, in the opinion of Mr Chungong.
