Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova meets with President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, who is in Belarus on an official visit, has had a meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko.

President Alexander Lukashenko greeted the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament sincerely and expressed his belief that the current visit would contribute to the development of relations between the two parliaments.

They highlighted at the meeting the progress of strategic ties based on mutual trust and respect as well as friendship and co-operation

Alexander Lukashenko said that they in Belarus highly appreciated the contribution of Azerbaijanis to the victory and liberation of Belarusian lands, especially in these days of the 80th  anniversary of the country's liberation from fascist invaders; their feat is remembered.

The conversation continued and President Alexander Lukashenko recalled with great pleasure his visit to Azerbaijan last year, praised his meetings with President Ilham Aliyev and the achievements of Azerbaijan under the leadership of the Head of State. He remarked that Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, was a very far-sighted, powerful person, and that President Ilham Aliyev was a worthy successor of the Great Leader.

‘The kind of work he has done, hardly any other president after Ilham Aliyev would ever do that again,’ said the Head of Belarussian State.

Having recalled his trip to our deoccupied territories together with President Ilham Aliyev during his visit to Azerbaijan, the President of Belarus made a special mention of the climate and the natural beauty of Shusha.

‘I am certain that you will achieve another success in restoring life in those territories, and we will be delighted to take part in this,’ stressed the Belarusian leader.

Also, Alexander Lukashenko voiced satisfaction with the level of the linkage between the parliaments of the two countries, saying that the interparliamentary relations were not behind the current interstate ties at all.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova thanked the President of Belarus for the generous hospitality and kind words about our country and conveyed greetings from President Ilham Aliyev.

President Alexander Lukashenko asked to convey his greetings to the President of Azerbaijan.

As Speaker Sahiba Gafarova said then, our peoples are united by traditional ties of friendship and common values, and the bilateral relations have been developing in all the areas covered since our countries gained independence. She emphasised the role of the high-level ties between the Heads of State in the advancement of those ties. According to Sahiba Gafarova, the official visit of President Ilham Aliyev to the Republic of Belarus in 2018 and the state visit of President Alexander Lukashenko to Azerbaijan last month and the documents signed during these visits have generated a special momentum behind our relations.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis underscored noted the importance of a successful continuation of those relations at the parliamentary level and mentioned the legislatures’ collaboration, both bilateral and within inter-parliamentary organisations.

They also broached the development of trade and economic co-operation between the two countries and the existing potential in this area. It was noted that during the visit of the President of Belarus to Azerbaijan, talks were held on the possibility of further expanding co-operation and deepening ties in many areas. They then emphasised the importance of the work of the parliaments in creating an appropriate legislative framework in this regard.
