Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova who is on a working visit to Geneva, Switzerland has had a meeting with Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong.

They discussed the co-operation between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. It was said that the Milli Majlis, whilst collaborating with international parliamentary bodies on both bilateral and multilateral levels, places utmost importance on strengthening ties with the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The successful organisation of several events within the framework of this co-operation creates opportunities for deepening their partnership further. Martin Chungong lauded Azerbaijan's active and effective participation in the work of the Organisation.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova recalled her meetings with the Secretary-General and the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at various international events. She remarked that the active dialogue between the parties is an indicator of their intention to develop bilateral relations.

The meeting discussed the preparatory work for the holding of the Parliamentary Conference on the sidelines of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will take place in Baku in November. It was stated confidently that this forthcoming event will provide significant support to the COP29 activities on the parliamentary platform. It was emphasised that this conference will offer parliamentarians an opportunity to exchange views and propose new ideas and suggestions in the fight against climate change.
