Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova Meets with Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in our country Qasim Mohiuddin on 31 October.

Greeting the guest cordially, the Speaker of Parliament expressed satisfaction with the dynamic advance of the inter-state relations and talked about the Azerbaijani-Pakistani bonds of friendship and fraternity. Sahiba Gafarova remarked that the current level of strategic partnership of our countries gives rise to extensive opportunities to develop our relations.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis thanked Pakistan and its Parliament for the constant support to our country internationally, both during the 30-year-long occupation of Azerbaijani lands and when the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was restored. Sahiba Gafarova also reiterated Azerbaijan’s standing with Pakistan invariably and supporting a settlement of the Cashmere Problem on the basis of the resolutions that the UN had passed.

The role of the inter-parliamentary connections in the progress of the bilateral relations was praised in the course of the conversation; the importance of reciprocal official and working visits of the Heads of Parliament as well as of regular contacts and co-operation of our MPs in international parliamentary organisations was underlined as well.

They then talked about the preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will take place in Azerbaijan in the coming days. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova called the dirty political games unleashed on the eve of the COP29 unacceptable and emphasised the universal significance of this event. Besides, the guest was updated on the Parliamentary Conference which the Milli Majlis is going to hold together with the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the margins of the COP-29. It was said that the event would serve a serious platform for the parliamentarians to exchange views on countering the climate change.

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in our country Qasim Mohiuddin conveyed to Speaker Sahiba Gafarova the greetings and good wishes of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He said that the relations between Azerbaijan and Pakistan are based on the historical roots and fraternity, and expressed a confidence of the continuation of this relationship. The Ambassador added that Pakistan was one of the countries to confirm its participation in the COP29 immediately, and said he was certain that Azerbaijan would host the event successfully and to high standards.  

According to the Ambassador, Azerbaijan’s stance has always rested on justice, international law standards and principles, and resolutions of the UN Security Council whereas Pakistan has invariably stood by Azerbaijan. Also, the Ambassador remarked on the great significance to Pakistan of Azerbaijan’s support to his country in the Cashmere matter.

Furthermore, the Ambassador praised our country’s efforts aimed to solve global problems such as the climate change, and conveyed congratulations on the forthcoming hosting of the COP29 by Azerbaijan. He said confidently that Pakistan would be represented at a high level at this event and that this gathering will reinforce the global discussion about climate change matters.

There was also an exchange of views on other issues of shared interest at the meeting.
