Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Secretary General
Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting on 15 November with the visiting Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong.
They exchanged opinions as to the matters issuing from the Azerbaijani COP29 presidency as well as concerning the run-up to the Parliamentary Meeting that the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan will co-organise on the margins of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change current in Baku now.
Martin Chungong congratulated our country on hosting such a remarkable global-scale event as the COP29 happens to be. It was then pointed out that the reparations for the COP29 set high standards; the work done to that end was praised duly.
As was said at the meeting, the issues arising due to climate change are having adverse impacts on all the countries; they then emphasised the necessity of world-wide co-operation in this field. It was said also that the COP29 taking place in Baku is a crucial international event in terms of the relevance of the topics discussed and its contribution to solving the problems caused by climate change. It was also highlit that a clear testament to the enormous interest in the COP29 is the delegates from various countries around the world, over 70,000 guests withal, attending the conference.
The relations between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union were praised. Azerbaijan’s active contribution to the IPU activities and events was brought up and so was the fruitful collaboration of the two sides. This co-operation will culminate in the high organisational standards of the Parliamentary Meeting that is going to take place on the COP29 margins. Furthermore, Mrs Gafarova and Mr Chungong mentioned the importance of the topicality of the conference and underscored the significance of the conference in terms of discussing future steps to take in the countering of climate change.
