Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with President of Inter-Parliamentary Union

Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting on 15 November with Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Tulia Ackson who is visiting in our country currently.

The discussion with the guest, who had arrived in Azerbaijan to participate in the Parliamentary Meeting organised jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan as part of the COP29, covered such topics as the co-operation between Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the significance of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) being held in Baku.

The guest expressed satisfaction with the high level of organisation of the COP29. She said that the separate meetings that the President of Azerbaijan Mr Ilham Aliyev had held with conference participants, as well as his attention to the opinions and statements of the guests had been highly appreciated. The Head of the Inter-Parliamentary Union extended gratitude to the President for the hospitality shown. The guest expressed particular appreciation to the Azerbaijani side for creating conditions that ensured the voices of the Small Island States were heard at the COP29.

They then talked over the assistance extended by Azerbaijan to the Small Island States and our country’s initiatives that were put forth when Azerbaijan presided over the Non-Aligned Movement. It was said that the Small Island States were the most vulnerable to climate change. The Climate Change Summit of Leaders of the Small Island Developing States held within the framework of the COP29 and President Ilham Aliyev's participation in the Summit, his substantive speech, and the support extended to these countries, are of great importance in this regard.

As the conversation went on, Sahiba Gafarova made the guest aware of the Parliamentary Meeting that the Milli Majlis in conjunction with the Inter-Parliamentary Union are staging on the COP29 sidelines on 16-17 November. It was said that the Meeting would be attended by approximately 330 delegates of national parliaments and international organisations.

The guest said she was certain of Azerbaijan’s successful COP29 chairmanship and of the work done at the event to bring fruit.

The also spoke about the growth prospects of the relations between the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and about other matters of shared interest.
