Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Meets with Speaker of Senate of Uzbekistan’s Oliy Majlis

On 19 February, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva who had arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) held in Baku. 

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova described Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan as friendly and brotherly nations united by common history and cultural values. She emphasised that bilateral relations continue to develop successfully under the leadership of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The closeness of our countries is evident in political, economic, cultural, and other spheres. 

During the conversation, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis thanked her guest for accepting the invitation to take part in the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) hosted in Azerbaijan. She noted that the advancement of relations between our countries to the backdrop of complex political developments in the world serves the common interests of our peoples. The friendship between our Heads of State plays a significant role in further strengthening mutual ties.

According to Sahiba Gafarova, Uzbekistan’s construction of a school in Azerbaijan’s liberated Fuzuli district is highly valued in the country and stands as a testament to the fraternal relations between the two nations. 

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis expressed her satisfaction with the successful development of co-operation between the two parliaments and highlighted the special role played by inter-parliamentary friendship groups within the legislative bodies of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. 

Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva voiced her gratitude for the invitation to the APA session. 

The guest noted that Azerbaijan’s achievements under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev are impressive. She underlined that initiatives undertaken by Azerbaijan have a global impact. Tanzila Narbayeva praised the high-level organisation and execution of such a significant international event as the COP29. She also announced that Uzbekistan will host the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and expressed confidence that an Azerbaijani delegation would participate in the session.

The guest said that the warm personal relations between the leaders of the two states had a positive impact on parliamentary co-operation. The language and cultural proximity of the nations provides a strong foundation for further deepening their interaction, in her opinion.

Tanzila Narbayeva stressed that Azerbaijan’s experience within the Non-Aligned Movement is of great significance for Uzbekistan as well. 

Important steps were taken towards the institutional development of the Non-Aligned Movement during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the organisation, and these initiatives have a global impact. 

The meeting also had an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.

The MPs are elected as based on the majority electoral system by free, private and confidential vote reliant on the general, equitable and immediate suffrage. The tenure of a Milli Majlis convocation is 5 years.
