There was a telephone conversation at the initiative of Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova between her and Chair of the Great National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) Mustafa Şentop on 24 April. The speakers of the fraternal countries jointly deplored the statement by the President of the United States of America Joseph Biden regarding recognition of the fictitious ‘Armenian genocide’.

The Chair of the Milli Majlis described that statement as a historical mistake, an unacceptable move liable to dash the recently emerging hopes of peace and comprehensive co-operation amongst the countries of the region.

Politicising of history is an extremely hazardous trend, Madame Chair remarked before emphasising that Azerbaijan was invariably supportive of the brotherly Turkey.

Chair of the fraternal Turkey’s Parliament Mustafa Şentop thanked Sahiba Gafarova for her stance and support. The step taken by the U.S. Administration is a grave mistake which Mr Şentop said he hoped would be corrected soon enough.

Towards the end of their conversation the speakers exchanged opinions about the current co-operation and interparliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey.
