Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova Met with Latvian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Dainis Garančs
The Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with the Ambassador of the Latvian Republic to our country Dainis Garančs on 5 November.
Welcoming the visitor, the Chair told him of the great importance attached by Azerbaijan to advancing the diverse relations with the Latvian Republic as a friendly state and a partner. The new era set in for the bilateral relations as both states had regained national independence in that the progress of political, economic and humanitarian co-operation was initiated, she noted.
Talking about the roles of the two states’ leaders in maintaining the progress of the bilateral co-operation, the Speaker underlined the significance of the visits exchanged by them. The bipartite relations are based on a foundation woven of the principles of mutual respect and equitable collaboration whilst the ties built bilaterally and within international organisations serve the interests of both countries. Azerbaijan and Latvia co-operate closely in the European structures and the Eastern Partnership as well as upon other international platforms.
Next, the Chair touched upon the role that the parliaments play in the system of interstate relations and underscored the weight of the work done by the friendship groups present in the parliaments of both countries. Mrs Gafarova stressed the necessity of resuming mutual visits of MPs after the pandemic would end, and of exchanging information alike.
Furthermore, as she spoke of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Highland Garabagh, the Speaker updated Ambassador Garančs on the situation in the near-front region and furnished him with ample information about Armenian provocations.
There was also an exchange of opinions about the measures implemented in both Azerbaijan and Latvia to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The two discussed the role of international co-operation in this cause.
Having expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, the Latvian ambassador to Azerbaijan Dainis Garančs highlighted the great importance that his country perceives in the furtherance of its relations with Azerbaijan.
As ambassador, he would spare no effort to ensure a continued progress of the relations, Mr Garančs promised before praising the contribution of parliamentary diplomacy to the interstate relations.
The current developments in this particular region of the South Caucasus are in Latvia’s focus, Ambassador Garančs remarked before reiterating the viewpoint of his state that the international law norms and principles were to be observed in resolving the regional conflicts.
The meeting also saw an exchange of opinions about the current state and future development prospects of the Interparliamentary ties, about various aspects of the bilateral co-operation and interaction in the international arena, and about other matters of mutual interest.
