Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Tagasse Chaffo on 28 July as part of her official visit to this country.

Tagasse Chaffo mentioned the great importance that his country attaches to the relations with Azerbaijan and expressed his confidence that this visit of the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament will contribute to the continuing deepening of the co-operation between the legislative bodies.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, in turn, too, remarked that this visit was a token of the high appraisal of the relationship on Azerbaijan’s part.

It was observed during the meeting that discussions had been held as to continued development of our countries’ co-operation in the course of the visits of President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Taye Atske Selassie and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to Azerbaijan as well as during their meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

The significance of the visit of Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva to Ethiopia in January 2026 was emphasised in the conversation.

It was remarked that there are extensive opportunities for our countries to co-operate in tourism, business, mutual investments, culture and humanitarian affairs. The application of the ASAN Service model in Ethiopia was referred to as an example of the success of this co-operation; it was emphasised that this model is considered as Azerbaijan’s trace in Ethiopia.

The meeting saw an extensive exchange of opinions about issues concerning continued development of the inter-parliamentary relations. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova invited Tagasse Chaffo to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan and the invitation was accepted with satisfaction.

It was stressed that there is a great potential to deepen the co-operation between our Parliaments. The importance of the mutual visits of Speakers of Parliament and between the friendship groups was underlined in this regard. Interest was expressed in broadening the co-operation amongst parliamentary committees and Staffs.

Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Parliament of Ethiopia let it be known that reforms are being conducted in the legislative body of his country currently and stressed that the relevant experience of Azerbaijan is of interest to them.

The Speakers also underscored the significance of co-operation in the UN, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and other international organisations.

There was at the meeting also an exchange of opinions about other matters of shared interest.
