Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova meets with Prime Minister of Ethiopia

Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali on 29 July in the course of her official visit to that country.

There was a broad exchange of opinions about the growth prospects of the friendly relations and mutually beneficial co-operation between Azerbaijan and Ethiopia at the meeting.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali mentioned that Azerbaijan has gained a high authority in the international community over the past years and underlined the strong international response to the successes that our country achieved under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. He recalled with content his official visit to Azerbaijan in February 2026 and the meeting with President Ilham Aliyev that was held during it. it was said that the fruitful discussions held at that meeting generated a new momentum behind the advancement of the Azerbaijani-Ethiopian relations whereas the agreements reached there created a massive foundation for expansion of the co-operation.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali asked that his sincere greetings be communicated to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr Ilham Aliyev.

Abiy Ahmed Ali emphasised his country’s interest in expanding the economic co-operation with Azerbaijan and pointed out with special gravitas the importance of implementing projects in the oil and gas sector. Tapping the existing potential in those areas effectively serves the interests of both countries, he remarked.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis thanked for the generous hospitality extended and said that the rapid development of the country she observes during the visit has impressed her favourably. She observed that this visit affords promising opportunities to broaden the co-operation between Azerbaijan and Ethiopia in new directions.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova told during the meeting about the path of development of our country and underlined the exceptional contribution of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev to the strengthening of the statehood traditions of our countries as well as to forming the development strategy of the modern Azerbaijan. She stressed Azerbaijan’s confident progress along the path of dynamic development as well as that the international position and reputation of our country are growing consistently under the guidance of President Ilham Aliyev.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis accentuated the special role of the sincere Azerbaijani-Ethiopian relations, established at the level of the Heads of State, as well as of high-status contacts in the advancement of bilateral co-operation.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova informed the Prime Minister of the large-scale restoration and building work being carried out in the de-occupied territories of our country with reliance upon Azerbaijan’s own resources.

It was stressed during the conversation that the existing inter-parliamentary connections contribute importantly to the on-going progress of the two countries’ relationship. The significance of reciprocal visits of the Speakers and Members of Parliament was underscored as well. There was an exchange of opinions as to the issues concerning interaction and collaboration within international parliamentary organisations.

It was stated confidently at the meeting that the political, economic, humanitarian and inter-parliamentary co-operation between Azerbaijan and Ethiopia will continue developing with success.
