Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary Connections Samad Seyidov had a meeting with Ambassador of Lithuania to Azerbaijan Edigijus Navikas on 18 May.

The Committee Chairman remarked during the conversation that the Baltic States, including Lithuania, had a gravity of their own in the system of foreign relations of Azerbaijan. The twinning project financed by the European Union (EU) had been carried out in Azerbaijan in partnership with Lithuania. That long-term projects had secured achievements – with the help of our Lithuanian friends – in exchange of state administration experience between Azerbaijan and Europe and in aligning the national legislative system with the EU standards. However, of the post-war late, there have been certain misunderstandings between the EU inclusive of the Baltic State and, on the other hand, Azerbaijan. To eliminate them, Samad Seyidov suggested, it is necessary to inject more energy in information exchange, the dialogue, mutual delegation visits and contacts between the MPs of the two sides.

In turn, Ambassador Edigijus Navikas expressed a confidence in the efficiency of the dialogues to be built and co-operation to be incepted as means of preserving sustainable peace and stability in the region.

The leader of the Azerbaijan-Lithuania interparliamentary contacts Working Group Nasib Mahamaliyev who was present at the meeting said that the arrangements resulting from the trilateral statement that ended the 44-day war ensured lasting peace in the region whilst also giving solid guarantees of future regional development. It was said then that whilst Azerbaijan strove to reinforce its borders with Armenia, the latter, just like in the recent tensions case, would not omit a single opportunity to reduce such guarantees to a naught and spread false, fake information in order to win sympathy and secure support for itself. The emergence, then, of ill-conceived resolutions and declarations based on such one-sided and partial claims posed grave threats to regional security.

It was pointed out during the conversation that Azerbaijan remained committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region as well as to finding affirmative approaches to settling points of difference of any manner.
