Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met the newly-appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in our country Duncan Norman on 23 September.

As she congratulated the Ambassador on the beginning of his diplomatic tenure in Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova referred to the friendly and partnerly relations between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom. She emphasised the significance of reciprocal visits and of summit and high-level meetings in the progress of the relations between our countries. She also stressed the necessity of continuing this dynamic henceforth.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova recalled fondly her visits to the United Kingdoms and meetings as well as negotiations with high-ranking UK officials having visited our country as she was talking about the role of inter-parliamentary connections in the development of the relations between the two states. The activities of the Milli Majlis Working Group for inter-parliamentary relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland were high-lit, and so was the important role of reciprocal visits and regular contacts in the continuing expansion of the relations. Amongst other things, it was remarked that our legislative bodies co-operate in such international organisations as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the OSCE PA and the NATO PA.

Whilst speaking about the close co-operative relations existing between our countries, Ambassador Duncan Norman mentioned the amble opportunities to deepen the relationship further. It was said that there were extensive options to develop co-operation in education, culture and humanitarian affairs; the necessity of continuing contacts and joint initiatives was stressed, too.   

The Ambassador remarked as the conversation unfolded that he would be making efforts during his diplomatic mission in our country to ensure a continued progress of the ties between our legislative bodies alongside with that in other areas.

The meeting also saw an exchange of opinions about other matters of shared interest.
