Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova took part in the event held in Baku on 29 September on the occasion of the Constitution Day, the national holiday of the Slovak Republic.

In her address at the event, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis conveyed the sincere congratulations and best wishes of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr Ilham Aliyev and congratulated the friendly Slovak people on this remarkable day from the bottom of her heart.

As the Speaker remarked then, the relations between Azerbaijan rest on traditional friendship as well as mutual respect and trust today and we are witnessing those relations’ intensive growth, especially, over the past years.

The first official visit of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Slovakia in December 2025 and the official and working visits of the President of Slovakia Peter Pellegrini and the Prime Minister Robert Fico to the Republic of Azerbaijan in countries, 26 demonstrated vividly the active political dialogue of the two countries, according to the Speaker of the Milli Majlis. She said that the Azerbaijani-Slovak relations attained to the highest level of strategic partnership in a short period thanks to the political will of the Heads of State and a consistent approach to the bilateral ties. The principal position regarding matters of interest to our countries as well as the manifest solidarity and mutual support are the considerable characteristics that make this partnership distinct.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova proceeded to say that the bilateral relations, which are based on an active political dialogue, are expanding in various areas with each day. Our co-operation in the fields of economy and trade, energy, mutual investments, military technologies, culture, education and inter-parliamentary links stands out for the positive development dynamic. The existing framework of treaties and legal instruments is being expanded with new treaties encompassing the said areas.

It was indicated in the speech that the Joint Working Group on Economic Co-operation makes it possible to co-ordinate interaction in implementing specific projects effectively and that direct flights between the two countries will create a momentum behind tourism co-operation as well as that between the business circles. Most importantly, they will strengthen the contacts between our peoples. The importance of intensifying scientific, educational and cultural ties as well as of enriching the existing initiatives further with new undertakings was high-lit in this regard.

As she recalled the official visit of the President of Slovakia Peter Pellegrini with a large delegation to Azerbaijan in July this year, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova observed that that visit was remembered by the substantive negotiations conducted with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Garabagh, in Shusha, as well as by the important agreements that had been achieved. Besides, the two Presidents acquainted themselves in detail with the Smart Village project that a Slovak company is implementing in the village of Bash Garvand of Aghdam Province. That project is an important token of the sincere friendly ties between our countries; Slovakia’s support in the cause of restoring our de-occupied territories is appreciated highly – as much as her input in the reclamation of Garabagh is. As regards the school founded by the Heads of State, it will become another symbol of our peoples’ friendship.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis let it be known whilst concluding her speech that the common stance demonstrable in the approach to the matters on the bilateral agenda and the steps being taken to achieve the definite goals provide for sustained development of the effective interaction between Azerbaijan and Slovakia. At the same time, the current nature of the relationship makes it possible to work in new co-operation fields as well and to make the fullest use of the existing bilateral co-operation potential.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova expressed a belief that the Azerbaijani-Slovak friendship and strategic partnership, built up on a solid foundation, will continue developing with success and serving the progress of our peoples in the years to come.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic Robert Kaliňák and the country's Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Azerbaijan Elchin Gasimov spoke at the event pointing at the development of the relations between our countries and emphasising the contribution of reciprocal high-level visits and intensive contacts to the further expansion of our ties.
