The Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with the Ambassador Salima Abdelhak of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria on 12 November.

The Speaker referred to the special importance that Azerbaijan attaches to developing the relations with Algeria as one of the first countries to recognise our independence. The meeting with the Ambassador coincides with the days crucial and historic to Azerbaijan – the time when the country is restoring its territorial integrity, Mrs Gafarova remarked before thanking the Algerian side for their position regarding this struggle against the Armenian occupiers.

The mutual relations resting on mutual respect and equitable partnership as well as the positive dynamics on the parliamentary plane and the furtherance of the relations – including in the format of the Non-Aligned Movement – to address the international and regional matters concerning both sides were brought up during the conversation, too. This co-operation is of importance for the maintenance of peace and security, it was pointed out.

It was noted also that the exchanged visits of both countries’ high-ranking officials and the conversations held during such visits served to deepen the bilateral relations further whilst the expansion of the political dialogue had its influence on other areas, too. The Azerbaijani side are interested in advancing the parliaments’ relations and believe that the exchanged visits of both sides’ MPs promote the common cause.

Thanking for the warm welcome, Ambassador Abdelhak witnessed the interest of her country in promoting the political, economic, humanitarian and cultural bonds with Azerbaijan. She went further to say that the continuation of the political dialogue ensured a further intensification of the bilateral and multilateral co-operation. It is equally as important to intensify the Interparliamentary ties and to keep up the exchanges of opinions between the two countries’ MPs upon various platforms, in her opinion.

Gender equality, the roles of women in society and politics, countering the COVID-19 pandemic and other subjects of shared interest were discussed during the meeting as well.
