Speakers of Azerbaijani, Slovak Parliaments Hold a Joint Press Briefing
The meeting of the speakers of the Azerbaijani and Slovak parliaments, held on 8 October in the format of the current official visit of Chair of the Milli Majlis Gafarova to Slovakia, was followed up with a joint press briefing of the two parliaments’ leaders.
The Chair of the Milli Majlis told of the successful course of the Milli Majlis delegation’s visit to Slovakia – the first official visit of a speaker of the parliament of Azerbaijan to that country, incidentally.
‘We have had constructive meetings with the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Eduard Heger and the Chairman of the National Council Boris Kollár during the visit; the meetings continue as planned. We have discussed the Azerbaijani-Slovak relations on the parliamentary plane; there have also been exchanges of views upon further deepening of our connexions – bilaterally and multilaterally alike,’ Madame Speaker told the media.
Sahiba Gafarova also said that Azerbaijan was interested in furthering its relations with Slovakia as one of the European Union states. She mentioned her discussion of reciprocal visits and an exchange of legislative experience with Chairman of the National Council Boris Kollár.
Our inter-parliamentary relations progressing can factor importantly in a continued closing-in of our nations and in letting the Slovak society learn the truth about Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani society become objectively aware of developments in Slovakia, Mrs Gafarova emphasised. She voiced a confidence that the deepening inter-parliamentary relations would make an input to the progress of the relations between our two countries.
At the meetings that have already taken place, the Chair of the Milli Majlis has informed her vis-à-vis in detail about the new situation established in our region after Azerbaijan’s 44-day Patriotic War had ended. It has been emphasised that Azerbaijan had restored its territorial integrity as recognised internationally consequent to that war. Madame Speaker added that, speaking ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of the Khojali Genocide committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan, she had expressed a wish that the parliament of Slovakia, too, make known its attitude to that crime against humanity.
