The Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting with the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai on 14 October.

Welcoming the guest, the Speaker said that Azerbaijan attached a great importance to furthering its relations with the influential international organisations including the UN. She underscored the active involvement of the UN Office in Baku in various events undertaken in the country.

The Chair went on to speak of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Highland Garabagh; she voiced the regret that the 4 resolutions of the UN regarding the conflict had not been carried out yet. Armenia ignored the decisions of such a relevant organisation as the UN is, and would not desist from its occupation policy, she added. The OSCE Minsk Group tasked to settle the conflict has not achieved any result in the close to 30 years of work whilst Armenia that aspires to new territories continues its provocations and they, in turn, cause the tensions in the region to mount.

The Speaker told of the Armenian armed forces’ artillery shelling and missile attacks on the cities, provincial hubs and villages of Azerbaijan, specifying that Armenia was targeting Azerbaijan’s civil population and civil infrastructure.

It was mentioned that the Milli Majlis had appealed to the parliaments of several countries and to influential international organisations about the current situation.

Azerbaijan advocates a solution of the problem within the international legal frameworks and based on the principle of national territorial integrity whereas Armenia shows the world, time and again and through every act it makes, its disregard for the international law, Mrs Gafarova emphasised.

The UN Resident Co-ordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isaczai thanked the Chair of the Milli Majlis for the warm welcome and the detailed information about the situation in the region consequent to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Highland Garabagh. Mr Isaczai reiterated the standpoint of the organisation that he represents regarding the conflict and expressed a hope that a solution would be found to this problem soon enough.

Then, the guest praised the initiatives and efforts of Azerbaijan to struggle the global COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the UN Office in Baku was constantly in touch with the Territorial Medical Department Administration Combine (TƏBİB) about the matter at hand and that a plan of work for the coming years, to be carried out in conjunction with Azerbaijan, was in the making.

There was also an exchange of opinions about the UN-Azerbaijan cooperation growth prospects, ways to resolve regional conflicts and other matters of shared interest at the meeting.
