The visiting delegation led by Chairman of the Estonia-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group of the Riigikogu Sven Sester on 3 November left for the town of Agdam freed of the Armenian occupation in order that they can acquaint themselves with the aftermath of the outrage and the traces of the crimes wreaked in the town by the armed forces of Armenia.

The Estonian guests travelled in the company of First Deputy Chair of the Milli Majlis Ali Huseynli, Leader of the Milli Majlis working group for the inter-parliamentary connexions Azerbaijan-Estonia Jala Ahmadova, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Estonia Anar Maharramov and other officials.

Once on location, the Estonian lawmakers met the staff of the Special Representation for the Agdam Province of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic who supplied the arrivals with abundant information about the history and the present-day state of Agdam and about the Armenian fascism that had been raging here before. It was pointed out to the Estonian MPs that Agdam had been one of the biggest and most advanced towns of not only the Garabagh Region but also the country as a whole before the Armenian capture. There had been advanced industries and well-developed agriculture there. The Armenian invaders sacked Agdam after capturing it on 23 July 1993 – they plundered, demolished and burnt to the ground residential houses, public buildings, schools, culture centres, nursery schools, hospitals and production enterprises and not only in Agdam but also in all the villages across all of the province. As if that was not enough, the Armenian invaders went on to vandalise the cemeteries and the historic and cultural heritage of Agdam. Once one of the most beautiful Azerbaijani towns, Agdam is merely a heap of robbed ruins today, the Estonians were told.

The Armenian-destroyed living houses, civil facilities, religious centres and the cultural and historical sites of Agdam were toured during this visit. That included the ruins of the Palatial Complex, the Friday Mosque of Agdam, the Drama Theatre, the Bread Museum and the local Martyrs’ Lane.

Next, the guests were presented with the new master plan of Agdam and told of the forthcoming creative work to be carried out there.
