A memorial fitted with a water tap has been inaugurated in the Yeni Guneshli ‘D’ residential estate of the settlement of Garachukhur in Baku’s Surakhani District to honour Senior Corporal Mahir Agasalim oglu Mammadov, another son of the Motherland with whose blood our victory in the Patriotic War is written in the national history scrolls.

The MPs Sevinj Fataliyeva and Etibar Aliyev, the head of the Surakhani executive administration Aziz Azizov, the shahid’s family and friends as well as the local public took part in the opening ceremony.

Those who spoke there addressed the liberation of our lands from the occupation thanks to the adamant will and far-sighted leadership of Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev as well as the bravery and fortitude of the sons of the nation. May the shahids’ souls rejoice up; those patriots and brave ones brought freedom to our lands at the cost of their own lives, the people were saying.

Mahir Mammadov, a serviceman since 2003, had fought the enemy fearlessly in the April Engagement of 2016, too, before continuing his path of combat from the very day of the Patriotic War. He valiantly and actively contributed to the on-going destruction of the enemy facilities and strongholds. Senior Corporal Mammadov sustained a grave cranial injury in one of the battles, spent 12 days in a coma and became a shahid on 17 October. His body was interred in the village of Shikhhaput of the Khachmaz Province where he had been born and raised to become the hero that he was – and remains.

Mahir Mammadov is decorated with the medals ‘For the Motherland’, ‘For Liberation of Fuzuli’ and ‘Valiant Warrior’ posthumously to the decrees of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic.
