Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had a meeting on 27 April with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Ilia Darchiashvili who has arrived in Azerbaijan.

Madame Speaker welcomed the guest and told him that his resolution to pay his first abroad visit as Minister of Foreign Affairs to Azerbaijan spelled the high level of our relationship and that, doubtless, the arrival of Mr Darchiashvili was bound to bring an input to the progress of that relationship.

The diplomatic relations between our countries are turning thirty years in 2022. The relations have covered a path of success whilst our strategic partnership rests on a solid foundation, according to the Chair of the Milli Majlis. Azerbaijan and Georgia are two good neighbours and amicable states which have fruitful co-operation going in the political, economic, humanitarian and other fields. Also, our connexions have the material benevolent influence on stability and interaction regionally.

The substantial role of our legislative assemblies in the advancement of the bilateral relations was mentioned as well. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova recalled her official visit to Georgia on 19-20 April and the conversations she had had during it. She mentioned the progress of the inter-parliamentary relations – bilaterally as well as multilaterally. Both legislatures have the friendship groups in action; our parliamentary delegations act in the spirit of the closest collaboration in international organisations. There are ample opportunities to expand the interaction more via the work of the parliamentary committees. The existing trilateral co-operation format bringing together the international relations committees of the legislatures of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey is very useful in this sense.

Further, Mrs Gafarova informed Mr Darchiashvili of the new situation resulting from the victory of our country in the Patriotic war and the restoration of our territorial integrity. She also told him about the restoration and rebuilding work under way in the liberated territories. The steps being taken to normalise the Azerbaijani-Armenian relations were mentioned, too.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Ilia Darchiashvili thanked for the warm welcome given him and told of the meetings he had had during the current visit to Azerbaijan. The conversations had been productive, Mr Darchiashvili pointed out. Georgia attaches a great kind of importance to the furtherance of its relations with Azerbaijan, according to the minister who underlined the need to take the current bilateral strategic partnership further.

The Georgian minister touched on the special roles of the parliaments in the deepening of our relations. He praised the visit of the Chair of the Milli Majlis to his country and expressed a hope that that visit was going to give the progressing connexions a new impetus.

Mr Darchiashvili said that his country was pursuing a peace-loving policy as he was talking about the importance of boosting peace, security and co-operation in the region.

Other topics of mutual interest were talked over during the conversation as well.

The head of the working group for inter-parliamentary connexions with Georgia Arzu Naghiyev, our ambassador in Georgia Faig Guliyev, the Georgian ambassador to Azerbaijan Zurab Pataradze and other officials also took part in the meeting.
