The Global Parliamentary Conference co-organised by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and started in Istanbul on 20 June has come to a conclusion.

The parliamentary delegation led by Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova had been representing Azerbaijan at the Conference.

Following the two days of debate, our delegation also attended the closing ceremony at which First Deputy Speaker of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Ghana Joseph Osei Owusu presented an evaluation of the outcomes of the Global Parliamentary Conference. That was followed by the closing speech of Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Mustafa Şentop.

It should be remembered that the Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan had delivered a speech at the opening of the Conference on 20 June about the subject of migration and refugees, which is one of the principal items on the international agenda and is posing the questions very relevant to the modern epoch. In her speech, Mrs Gafarova had recounted the relevant experience and work of Azerbaijan.

There was also an exhibition about the plight of refugees and migrants world-wide on the sidelines of the Conference. Sahiba Gafarova showed the visitors at the exhibition photographic materials about the Azerbaijani internally displaced people evicted from their homes and native parts due to the Armenian occupation of the Azerbaijani territories in the early 1990s. Besides, the Chair of the Milli Majlis told those present at the exhibition of the aftermath of the Armenian occupation, Azerbaijan’s restoring her liberated territories currently and the arrangements made and being made to boost the social protection of the refugees and the IDPs.
